Work at a Voting Place During Voting Days

Come work with us

We're hiring enthusiastic, tech-savvy and customer service-oriented people to work at our Voting Places for the 2022 Markham Municipal Election!

During Early Voting Days (October 20 to 22), voters who visit a Voting Place will vote with a paper ballot. On Final Voting Day (October 24), voters who visit a Voting Place will vote on a touchscreen.

Who can work at a Voting Place

You can work at a Voting Place if you are:

  • At least 16 years old by October 20, 2022;
  • Legally allowed to work in Canada with a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN);
  • Vaccinated with a full series of COVID-19 vaccines (e.g., both doses of a 2-dose vaccine, or 1 dose of a single-dose vaccine);
  • Not related to or affiliated with a candidate or third party advertiser in the 2022 Markham Municipal Election; and,
  • Able to attend online or in-person training before your first shift.

Available Shifts

  • Up to 4 days (October 20, 21, 22 & 24)

Time Commitment

  • Training: attending a two-hour online or in-person session before your first shift
  • Shift(s): 9 AM to 9 PM

Payment

  • $270 per day (training pay is included in this rate)

Job Tasks

  • Help set up, open and close the Voting Place
  • Greet voters as they enter the Voting Place
  • Check voter IDs and direct them to the appropriate service table
  • Help voters with the voting process (if and as requested by the voter)
  • Inspect the Voting Place to make sure no campaign literature is around
  • Maintain a safe and sanitary workspace by supporting physical distancing and disinfecting common-touch surfaces and supplies
  • Other tasks assigned by the Voting Place Manager

Key Skills

  • Polite, friendly, and able to problem-solve
  • Good command of the English language (written and spoken)
  • Knowledge of other languages is an asset

Available Shifts

  • Up to 3 days (October 20, 21, & 22)

Time Commitment

  • Training: attending a two-hour online or in-person session before your first shift
  • Shift(s): 9 AM to 9 PM

Payment

  • $270 per day (training pay is included in this rate)

Job Tasks

  • Verify voter IDs
  • Search for and mark voters off the Voters' List using a computer application
  • Issue ballots to voters
  • Administer sworn statements to voters
  • Keep track of all ballots issued and voters who have voted
  • Maintain a safe and sanitary workspace by supporting physical distancing and disinfecting common-touch surfaces and supplies
  • Other tasks assigned by the Voting Place Manager

Key Skills

  • Comfortable using a computer
  • Organized and detailed-oriented
  • Able to multi-task
  • Polite, friendly, and able to problem-solve
  • Able to sit for long periods of time
  • Good command of the English language (written and spoken)
  • Knowledge of other languages is an asset

Available Shifts

  • Complete revision forms and administer sworn statements to voters
  • Maintain a safe and sanitary workspace by supporting physical distancing and disinfecting common-touch surfaces and supplies
  • Other tasks assigned by the Voting Place Manager

Key Skills

  • Comfortable using a computer
  • Able to multi-task
  • Organized and detailed-oriented
  • Polite, friendly, and able to problem-solve
  • Able to sit for long periods of time

Job Tasks

  • Help set up, open and close the Voting Place
  • Set up and shut down the Voting Place’s vote tabulator each day
  • Receive marked ballots and feed them through the vote tabulator
  • Keep track of all ballots cast through the vote tabulator each day
  • Secure the vote tabulator and all marked ballots throughout the day
  • Maintain a safe and sanitary workspace by supporting physical distancing and disinfecting common-touch surfaces and supplies
  • Other tasks assigned by the Voting Place Manager

Key Skills

  • Comfortable using touch-screen technology and resolving error messages
  • Organized and detailed-oriented
  • Polite, friendly, and able to problem-solve
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds to move vote tabulator
  • Good command of the English language (written and spoken)
  • Knowledge of other languages is an asset

We are looking for dynamic, vibrant, tech-savvy and customer service-oriented people who are 16 years of age or older to volunteer as part of our Election Outreach Team leading up to the municipal election. 

As a member of our team, you will represent Elections Markham at virtual and in-person events across Markham to promote the election, civic engagement, register voters and more!

We are looking for dynamic, vibrant, leadership focused, tech-savvy and customer service-oriented people who are 21 years of age or older to lead a team of volunteers, as part of our Elections Outreach Team leading up to the municipal election.

As a Volunteer Team Leader, you will represent Elections Markham and manage a team of volunteers at virtual and in-person events across Markham to promote voter registration, civic engagement and more!

There are also opportunities to get involved during Voting Days from October 14 to 24, 2022.
